Why Kessa exists

I’m Amit Sekhon. I founded Kessa. I’m not a doctor and I’m not a dietitian, and I think you should know both of those things before you give me $299.

Here’s what I kept running into. Women are being handed a prescription that completely changes how they eat — and almost no guidance about what to eat instead. The medication does its job. The nutrition part gets left to a pamphlet, a forum thread, and a lot of guessing. That’s not a criticism of anyone’s doctor; there are eleven minutes in an appointment and the prescription is the priority.

I’ve spent my career building consumer packaged goods and direct-to-consumer brands — the unglamorous work of figuring out what people actually eat, rather than what a label says they should. That’s a nutrition problem wearing a behaviour problem’s clothes. It turns out that’s exactly what this is.

So I looked for the app that handled the nutrition side properly. Everything I found either wanted to sell the medication, or treated this like any other diet. Neither is the problem. The problem is that when your appetite disappears, every bite you do manage has to work harder — and nobody was helping with that part.

What Kessa is. A subscription web app for women using a GLP-1 medication. It gives you a protein target, shows you what food actually hits it, and adjusts as your dose and your body change. It has material for when you’re thinking about stopping. It has a community of people in the same place.

What Kessa isn’t. We don’t prescribe anything. We don’t sell anything you inject, swallow, or ship. We’re not a telehealth company, we don’t sell supplements, and we don’t have a single financial reason to want you on this medication a day longer than you need to be. Your medication comes from your doctor. That relationship is yours and we don’t go near it.

Three things Kessa will never do.

1. Tell you what dose to take.
2. Show you a before-and-after photo.
3. Sell you a supplement, a shake, or a prescription.

If any of those ever change, I’ve broken a promise to you, and you should cancel.
